Abstract | A comparison between vertical and horizontal drainage systems been drawn for the lower part of Rechna Doab, Punjab, Pakistan. Both vertical and horizontal drainage systems have been designed. Horizontal drainage systems have been analyzed for 5 different depths and two different drainage criteria. Two alternatives have been analyzed for the vertical drainage system. Recharge to the groundwater aquifer has been estimated from the crop water requirements for the given cropping pattern and % of cropped area in each month. Reference crop evapotranspiration has been computed by using the modified Penman method for monthly intervals. The computed recharge has been checked by comparing it with present canal supplies and expected recharge amount from it. Design of the horizontal drainage system has been done by using the two layer Ernst model for the computation of drain spacings. The effect of anisotropy has also been taken into account. Costs of all important items have been evaluated and correlated with various drain spacings. Discounted costs have been evaluated for various discounting rates. The same exercise for costs and discounted costs has been conducted for the vertical drainage system. Best alternatives of the two techniques have been compared. The results show that open ditch drainage may prove highly successful falsifying the present general bias against open ditch drainage. The results indicate that horizontal open ditch drainage may become an ultimate selection for areas underlain by highly saline and moderately saline groundwater. |
