AbstractThe population growth of developing countries, together with the improvement of the standard of living, has caused the water demand to rise and constantly strains the capacity of water supply systems. Lack of appropriate methodology to evaluate the optimal expansion program of supply capacity has been a retarding factor in developing the available resources to meet the increasing demand. This study is conducted with the intention of filling this void by means of determining a methodology by which the capacity expansion program of water supply systems could be evaluated, together with their economic feasibilities. An attempt is made to develop a practical method for forecasting the water demand and to formulate the capacity expansion problem using the basic theories and dynamic programming techniques. The developed methodology is then applied to evaluate the optimal capacity expansion program of water supply of Buriram, Buriram Province, Northeast Thailand. Using the historical data between the year 1960 to 1980 to forecast the water demand of service areas. The results obtained from forecasting water demand have been compared to the capacity of the existing water supply of Buriram for adequacy. Finally, the proposed development scheme of water supply of Buriram is derived. Based on the performance obtained in this study, the application of the model can be adapted to other communities with similar development patterns.
