AbstractThis study presents the most efficient schemes to solve electrostatic load transfer problems of long bars partially embedded in multilayered half spaces. Cases of axial load transfer and bending are analyzed numerically. The near field is modelled using conventional finite elements, the far field using infinite elements and the embedded bar using one dimensional line elements with the modulus of elasticity equal to the difference between those of the real bar and the elastic half space. One dimensional bending elements of a long bar require C(1) continuity requirement, while the other elements of surrounding media require C(0) continuity requirement. Consequently, element stiffness matrix of a long bar is assembled together with the global stiffness matrix a long bar is assembled together with the global stiffness matrix after rotational degrees of freedom of the bar are eliminated. The results are compared with the existing analytical solutions for a homogeneous elastic half space.
