AbstractThis study deals with an analytical and experimental investigation of the behaviour of pre-tensioned ferrocement elements under direct tension and flexure. The effect of prestress is to improve some of their mechanical properties. in particular, their first crack strength. Theoretical expressions are derived to predict these properties for use in analysis and design of ferrocement elements. Certain assumptions are made to simplify the analysis. The materials is treated as a composite where the law of mixture is applicable. Pre-tensioned ferrocement specimens with varying number of wire mesh layers and different levels of prestress were tested in direct tension and pure flexure. The results obtained were found to be in good agreement with theoretically predicted values.
