Abstract | Soybean (SJ4) was grown at five different planting hill spacings namely 200cm x 50cm(A), 128cm x 50cm (B), 72cm x 50cm (C), 32cm x 50cm (D), and 8cm x 50cm (E) during the dry season 1985. 20 micro lysimeters (small plastic buckets) were planted with soybean and placed inside the field, four per treatment, Daily water consumption of the lysimeters was gravimetrically measured. All the plants including field plants were well watered and equally treated with agronomic practices. The total water consumption of each treatment up to the end of the midseason was in increasing order row spacings 8cm, 32cm, 72cm, 200cm, and 128cm with average values in kilograms 31.76, 38.41, 41.42 and 43.23 respectively. Water in consumption of treatment D and E was significantly different at 5% from the other three. Calculated direct solar radiation load per 50cm row length in water kg of evaporability equivalents was 210.26, 206.34, 185.65, 106.88, and 84.07 for row spacings 8cm, 32cm, 72cm, 128cm, and 200cm respectively. Actual transpiration from soybean plants with respect to plant density did not increase significantly beyond 72cm inter-row spacing under prevailing climatic conditions. In other words, widening of row spacing can increase the evaporability demand of the microclimate of soybean crop up to 72cm row spacing. |
