Abstract | This study deals with the problem of determining optimal spare stock level of recoverable items in a two-level repair-inventory system which is the general structure in many transport organizations where the first level supplies reconditioned items to the second level for actual use. Two mathematical models are developed for operating transport organizations. First mode l concerns total system cost incorporating initial investment, annual holding cost and shortage cost and a solution methodology is proposed· to determine optimal spare stock level which minimize present value of total system cost. Second model is a generation of first model and its solution methodology utilizes the solution of first model as a starting point. A case study conducted for a transport corporation in a metropolitan city which consists of one first level depot and 9 second level depots are reported. Optimal spare stock level at each depot is obtained and sensitivity of the solution is analyzed with respect to cost parameters. Optimal strategies for reallocation of the surplus stock are obtained for various disposal values. |
