Abstract | This study explores the significant impacts on the environment in the light of worldwide experiences in geothermal heat utilization, bearing in mind their particular relevance to geothermal projects in the Philippines. Increased seismicity, land subsidence, soil erosion, thermal eruptions, air water and thermal pollution, noise, disruption of land use are all potential hazards associated with the development of a geothermal field. Geothermal operations and activities generally follow a sequence of exploration, testing, development and production. Each phase has differing impacts on the environment depending upon the potential and location of geothermal field with the chief impacts occurring during the development phase. Impacts experienced worldwide were anticipated. Mitigation and control measures include careful selection of development sites, use of multi-well directional drilling techniques, terracing and revegetation to minimize soil erosion as well as water pollution. Containment of drilling muds and wastes. use of evaporation ponds and reinjection of geothermal brine are measures adopted to mitigate impact on water and ecological environment. Use of silencers in steam-water separators and siting of power plants away from population centers have helped mitigate the effects of noise. Resettlement of displaced families were unde3rtaker and livelihood programs initiated to help the economically displaced residents. |
