AbstractThe growth of population in coastal areas has created an increasing demand for freshwater. Often this increase in demand is satisfied by a more intensive pumping of groundwater, disturbing the long term natural balance between fresh water and sea water. As a consequence the sea water encroaches inland and contaminates the fresh water. Since the two liquids are miscible and a transition zone separates the salt water and fresh water, the variable hydrodynamic-dispersion model is adopted to describe ยท the behaviour of the transition zone. A numerical model which couples both the groundwater flow equation and solute transport equation, is developed to solve the transient movement of contaminants in a two-dimensional unsteady groundwater flow system for layered coastal aquifers in two dimensional horizontal plane . Validity of the model is tested with known analytical solution. The accuracy of the numerical solution is checked with different time steps and different values of dispersity. Hypothetical examples are solved to illustrate the capability of the model. Sensitivity analysis is performed on some of the input parameters. The first hypothetical example is solved for different cases to see the the influence of the aquitard and the density dependency. The second hypothetical example is solved to obtain the concentration distribution in confined aquifer under pumping and recharge conditions.
