Abstract | The susceptibility of modern structures such as cable assisted bridges to wind action cannot be ignored . It has been found that atmospheric turbulence causes dynamic oscillations on such structures that may lead to some forms of aeroelastic instabilities. This report is a part of a continuing research on the use of the step-by-step time integration of the equations of motion to deal with the dynamic response of cable stayed bridges under natural wind loading including turbulence. The dynamic behavior of a cable stayed bridge (simplified model of the Erskine Bridge) under air forces classified as self-excited and buffeting forces is investigated and the response is compared to the observations on the actual bridge . Wind turbulence is simulated in a digital computer using the Shinozuka method. It is found that factors such as turbulence intensity of the wind, structural damping, and aerodynamic properties of the deck section significantly affect the response of the bridge. |
