Abstract | The experimental performance of the designed Reversed
Flat Plate Collector using multiple semi - circular
cylindrical slim reflectors and its water heating system
operating under thermosiphon flow conditions were evaluated.
Tests were conducted on the two types of reflectors, i.e.,
stainless steel reflectors and aluminum sheet stuck with
reflecting film and comparison of performances were
presented as well as the present and previous Reversed Flat
Plate Collector designs. Experimental results showed that
the collector which used aluminum sheet reflectors stuck
with reflecting film was much efficient and cost effective.
It had an improved performance of 24% than that obtained
with the previous RFPC designs and 7. 4% with the
conventional flat plat e collector. It was also noted that
curves showing the collector and system performances were
not parallel as expected. These may be due to the heating up
of the stainless steel reflectors.
A simulation model was made to predict the hourly
s to rage temperatures and daily system efficiency, and a
close agreement had been found with the experimental
results. A hi g h correlation resulted between the system
efficiency and the load temperature parameters. An annual
energy collected from the system was predicted at various
load temperatures. At different load conditions, an
estimate d payback period was being calculated. In principle,
a significant reduction of cost in collection of energy per square meter is possible without a n increase in state - of art in the collectors, or abraekthrough in materials and
manufacturing technology.
