Abstract | One of the most usual problems, corresponding to an incipient phase of water resources development is to estimate the capacity of a reservoir to meet a given water or power demand in an economical way. The reservoirs so far constructed often fail to fulfill the various levels of demand that is the returns are less than expected. Since reliability measures the probability that a given system works as anticipated, reliability studies of a multipurpose reservoir plays an important role at the planning stage. Many reasons among the unavailability causing events in a multipurpose reservoir are the scheduled maintenance of the turbines and other electrical and mechanical appliances required for power generation, water supply, and flood control, their failures, or simple unavailability due to maintenance work and the lack of inflow can be blamed as the potential causes. These failures which account for loss of system reliability may also be defined as the result of a unavailability of system component(s). This study presents a stochastic unavailability analysis of a hydropower generating reservoir. Operation and maintenance data of Karnaphuli Reservoir, Bangladesh have been used to demonstrate the viability of this method. The historical unavailability for a period of 26 years (1962-1987) were assessed for the three power generating units. Power generation is simulated to estimate the loss of potentially generated energy due to stochastic unavailability of the system elements. |
