Abstract | The purpose of this research is to study the area of
scour hole around the bridge pier. One of major causes of
bridge foundation failures is the scour holes created by
flowing water around the bridge piers. In order to produce a
safe and economical design of bridge protection, the engineer
needs to make an accurate prediction to the area of the scour
hole around the bridge piers.
This study is experimental work using physical models
matched with three sizes of sands (coarse sand , median sand
and fine sand ) and variation of flowing conditions, considering the c l ear-water flow , change the angles of attack
from an aligned pier. Four cylindrical piers and five blunt-nosed piers with five length to width ratios are tested.
Theoretical analysis shows that the area of scour hole
around the bridge pier is a function of pier Froude number ,
pier Reynolds number , pier dimension and bed material .
Experimental results show good agreement with the theoretical
consideration. A general formulae for design purposes for
various influencing factors (flow , pier and sand ) to the area
of scour hole around the pier have been derived. Also, a
simplified formulae has been proposed to compute the area of
protection around the bridge piers are included. |
