| Abstract | A geometrically nonlinear three dimensional finite element model is developed in this study for beam with thin-walled cross-sections with consideration of the combined flexural and torsional problems and effects of warping restraint condition. Total Lagrange formulation is used for the 6-node degenerated model from three dimensional field equations justified by reasonable assumptions . The equation of motion is discretized by the Galerkin's weighted residual method followed by a linearization suitable for Newton-Raphson and modified Newton-Raphson iteration techniques. Various examples of simple structures are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the derived element in practical analysis of thin-walled members. Finally, two different three dimensional cable-stayed bridges are analyzed. One of two-span for linear behaviour verification and another of seven-span for nonlinear analysis. A developed linear and nonlinear truss element together with a common linear beam element are modified for the illustration of these bridges. Special node arrangement is discussed. |
