AbstractThe method of seismic risk analysis of dams is formulated and applied for Tarbela dam in Pakistan as a case study. The ca uses for dam failure are de scribed by using cause-consequence diagrams. Dam failure is represented by loss of freeboard due to dynamic slope displacement and settlement of the crest of the embankment dam. The seismic hazard at the dam site is expressed in terms of probabilities of exceedance for ground acceleration and velocity. The water level in the reservoir and the earthquake-induced dam settlement at the crest are assumed as independent random variables. The probability density function of the water level is assumed. Different types of tail distributions in the range of dam crest and maxi mum design water level are considered. An empirical relation according to Bhatia is used to predict the slope displacement in terms of yield acceleration and peak values of ground acceleration and velocity. The probability of overtopping is computed considering different parameters, i.e. tail parameter of water distribution, dynamic amplification factor of ground motion, and settlement consolidation parameter due to ground shaking. Due to earthquake action the annual probability of overtopping of Tarbela dam using different sets of parameters varies between 3. 7x1o - 5 to 1. 4x1o - 9 •
