AbstractThe purpose of this study is to investigate the mechanical properties of straw-clay composite which is used to construct grain silo . Rice straw has been use d t o reinforce clay slurry or adobe. Basically the straw serves as reinforced fiber and clay as matrix . Before deter mining the mechanical and physical properties o f straw- clay composite , the properties of straw and clay are Separately deter mined. Straw-clay bundles had been tested in direct tension, axial compress ion, flexure, directs hear, bearing, fire test, weight loss due to immersion in water, thermal conductivity and density. Six composite wall panels having thicknesses of 15, 2 0 , and 25 cm. were formed by using straw-clay bundles placing into two different laying patterns namely " straight laying pattern" and " combination of straight and diagonal laying pattern " . Settlement and water loss of the wall panels as well as the surrounding temperature and relative humidity were recorded for a period of 20 days before they were subjected to load bearing tests. Test results showed that the optimum water content of clay slurry was found to be 55 % a nd the straw content ranges between 1 2- 1 5 % by weight. Th e settlement due to its own weight of the straw-clay composite wall panel was found to be 5 % of its height. This occurred over a period of 16 days after construction, and is mainly due to its own weight and water loss of the straw-clay composite wall panel. The bearing strength of the combination of straight and diagonal laying pattern is higher than that of straight laying pattern. The failure pattern of straight laying pattern under loading is due to the separation between the interface of each straw- clay bundle, this affect can be reduced by using combination o f straight and diagonal laying pattern. Straw-clay composite is a good insulating material comparing with other conventional construction material for grain storage silos. However, it is not waterproof.
