Abstract | The dynamic behaviour of Bakun dam, a zoned rockfill dam in Sarawak, Malaysia, is evaluated. A reservoir- induced design earthquake with magnitude 6. 4 and a peak acceleration at the dam site of 0. 318g are estimated. The tallest cross-section of the dam is modelled as a plane-strain system and the static and dynamic material properties are based on investigations for two dams in Taiwan. Full reservoir condition is assumed. The pre - earthquake stresses are calculated with program .ISBILD simulating twelve construction layers and the dynamic response analysis is carried out by program PLUSH. The equivalent linear method is employed to simulate material nonlinearity in the dynamic response analysis and only the horizontal earthquake component is considered. The probability of dam failure due to overtopping is investigated considering water level elevation in the reservoir and dam crest deformations due to ground shaking as random variables. The yield accelerations of potential failure surfaces are determined in a conventional slope stability analysis after Bis hop . Monte Carlo simulation is employed to calculate the dynamic slope displacement according to Newmark' s sliding block concept. The probability of overtopping due to a magnitude 6. 4 earthquake is given for different service lives. Since the design freeboard is large the probability of over topping is extremely small for a single event. |
