AbstractThe past twenty-five years have witnessed an outburst of rapid economic growth in East and Southeast Asia and this area is widely recognized as a "growth center" of the World. The growth is expected to continue in the decades to come. This work considers the fundamental problems involved in formulating a policy for industrial development in the context of the national economy of a country embarking on industrialization. To this end, the various understandings of what constitutes industrial policy, the factors that effect the formulation and implementation of industrial policy, its content and components, and the success that some developing countries have had with regard to industrialization are investigated. Although the countries included have significantly different socio-economic and political conditions, levels of industrial development and so on, this study draws some conclusions from a comparison of the experiences of Korea, Malaysia and Taiwan , whose industrial policies have played a decisive role in their economic development.
