| Abstract | Under suit able marine environment . submarine slope failures can occurred leasing large masses of sliding material that move over the sea-floor under the action of gravity . Realization of the occurrence of these slides is important particularly as they may affect structures founded on the sea-floor . such as pipe lines and platforms . Literature reveal several cases of large submarine slides a round the globe in the past. A model test has been performed to determine a model that estimates the force exerted by flowing clayey mud on a cylindrical pile. A model pile is moved horizontally at a constant velocity through stationary remolded clayey mud of known consistency and the resulting force is measured . Water content is varied from 90% to 150%. The force is found to be ma inly de pendent on the mud shear strength and slightly dependent on the velocity. A dimension less parameter K. that also removes scaling effect represent s the process . Proposed value of K for unidirectional remolded clayey mudflow has a lower limit of 12 . 7 and an upper limit of 16 . 8 in the velocity range of 1. 0 to 13. 0 cm. / sec. The results of the model test have finally been used to analyze the effect of similar mudflow on a typical offshore pile in stiff clay by numerical method . |
