AbstractThe use of a traffic control policy in a packet-switched computer network to improve the network performance and to provide the expected grade of service to the transport layer has been investigated in this study. The possibility of implementing priority queues at each switching node and admission control to the network at the network access level has been examined. The first part of the study was devoted to investigate the theoretical background of Head-Of-Line priority queueing system and it's applications to a computer network. It was found that an upper bound for the transmission line utilization under which the required grade of service can be provided. The second part was to discuss the protocol implementation for this priority queueing scheme. In this part using above mentioned upper bound for the utilization of a transmission line the traffic control policy called admission control was introduced. Then the possibility of implementing admission control at the OSI network layer and the Head-Of-Line priority queueing scheme at the OSI data link layer were discussed. Suitability of these traffic control policies for connection-oriented packet-switched computer network was examined by means of computer simulations. The influence of the priority scheme on an application which seeks low waiting time was found. The implementation of the traffic control policy which consists of admission control and priority queueing was found to be more effective for mixing of applications in a computer network .
