Abstract | Tourism is a large and growing industry. In recent years, earnings from tourists have become the single largest source of foreign exchange for Thailand. This research is an attempt to gain insight into the framework of tourism demand function in the case of Thailand. Real per capita GDP and relative consumer price index of host country to home country adjusted by exchange rate were used to estimate Thailand's tourism demand function. The demand functions were then used to project the growth in the tourism sector to provide a basis for tourism development and investment. Results indicate that tourism demand is very sensitive to the changes in income. For faraway countries, demand was found to be insensitive to the changes in relative price of travel abroad. Foi· nearly and neighbouring countries, demand was found to be sensitive to the changes in price. In projecting future demand of tourism, Malaysia is found to be the country from which most tourists to Thailand will originate. |
