Abstract | The concept of utilizing fluidized beds of granular particles in heat exchangers as a means of preventing scale formation in contaminated waters has been investigated. With the bed maintained on the contaminated water side of the heat exchanger, the tube surfaces have been found to remain free of scale throughout in the range being studied. Chemically treated water is used in the experiments to promote rapid fouling. One group of chemicals used comprises calcium chloride, sodium chloride and sodium bicarbonate . Another group of chemicals used comprises calcium carbonate, calcium sulphate and sodium bicarbonate. Experiments are conducted on vertical model fluidized bed heat exchanger having sand of different sizes: 0. 356 mm, 0. 675 mm and 0 . 925 mm. By varying the flow rate of hot water in the inner pipe, the overall heat transfer coefficient within the range tested are 2. 75, 1. 35 and 1. 27 KW/m2 ° C for the 0. 356 mm, 0. 675 mm and 0. 925 mm sand bed respectively. Heat transfer coefficients are high due to the presence of the bed particles. In tests on double pipe heat exchanger, moderate fouling occurs on the heat transfer surface after a running period of 50 hours accompany by a reduction in heat transfer coefficient. No fouling occurs on the fluidized bed heat exchanger during the test period. |
