Abstract | The Mekong Delta (MKD) is the world’s third largest delta plain, inhabited by nearly 18 million people and responsible for 50% of Vietnam’s total food production. The fast population growth and technological developments in MKD have created a continuously increasing demand for potable and industrial water supply. Since 1990 groundwater become the most important water supply in MKD. Land subsidence due to groundwater extraction is causing more and more concerns. However, a quantitative approach to investigate and study subsidence of this very large delta is still lacking. In this study, a systematic approach was proposed and applied integrating hydrogeological characterization to groundwater modeling and consolidation analyses. A hydrogeological cross-section in NW-SE direction of about 200 km long was constructed, including seven aquifers and seven aquitards up to 500 m deep. Based on the observed groundwater levels and the constructed aquifer model, a 3D groundwater modeling was done by using MODFLOW in GMS for a period of 10 years from 2000 to 2010 and to predict the drawdowns for 2010 to 2030. The drawdowns calculated by the groundwater model were used as boundary condition for consolidation analysis by TZP program (Giao, 1997). Settlement analysis along the selected cross-section, which crosses three provinces, An Giang, Hau Giang and Soc Trang provinces to predict subsidence for 1, 5, 10, 25 years since 2010. The results show the maximum subsidence could be up to about 100 mm after 25 years (since 2010) in Can Tho province where the thick layer of soft clay existence. |
