AbstractNumerical analysis of the flow passing through a weir , resting on pervious foundation of finite depth is obtained for two dimensional steady state conditions. In case of surface flow passing over the weir, The analysis has been made for four different flow conditions i . e. high flood and pond flow conditions with and with out concentration and retrogression of the flow. For the surface flow conditions, the analysis has been carried for a known degree of anisotropy and foundation geometry, with special reference to the Bagmati Barrage in Nepal . Effects of pertinent components of the structure on the cost are analysed from simulation. From the analysis it is seen t hat the depth of downstream cutoff plays a major role in the safety against piping . The vulnerability of the piping failure increases with the anisotropiness of the foundation. When the depth of the pervious stratum decreases the exit gradient and uplift pressure at the downstream end decreases but the risk of failure increases because of the concentration of the flow lines under the floor. Storage efficiency of the weir is highly dependent on the length of impervious floor in t he upstream side . and the depth of the cutoff. The total cost of the structure is dependent on the depth of the cutoff in the downstream end and impervious apron in the upstream side. When the total head loss increases the role of upstream floor increases from the optimisation point of view.
