Abstract | Study on carbonisation of fine biomass in cyclone reactor and screw
cum spouted bed carboniser was carried out. Experiments with cyclone
reactor showed the percentage yield of char and percentage of fixed carbon
to be a function of input oxygen/ carbon ratio. If high yield of about
27% is t he requirement, the cyclone has to be operated with an input
oxygen/carbon ratio of 0.08 at an air flow rate of 20 Nm3 / hour. If high
fixed car bon content of about 7 5 % is the requirement such as in
residential cooking or in industry the reactor has to be operated with
an input oxygen/carbon ratio of 0 . 20 at an air flow rate of 30 Nm 3 /hour.
The yield for a given percentage fixed carbon was found to be higher for
screw cum spouted bed carboniser than for cyclone reactor. The yield of
charcoal obtained from screw cum spouted carboniser was 25. 48 % with a
fixed carbon percentage of 35.64.
Study on carbonisation of briquettes was also carried out. The
results of t he effect of carbonisation temperature on cold briquettes
indicated that the percentage of fixed carbon increased with the increase
in carbonisation temperature but percentage yield of charcoal decreased.
Low temperature carbonisation results on rice husk briquettes obtained
torrefied briquettes, an intermediate product between densified briquette
and briquetted charcoal. The torrefied briquette burnt with less smoke
and was a l so easy to ignite and burned faster . |
