AbstractThe purpose of developing a file server is to provide a shared filing system utility for different users. File sharing is the foundation of any multi- user software . In the early days of personal computers, file sharing was largely clone in application software by default resulting in almost total lack of standardization . Currently disk and network operating systems are right fully assuming this responsibility. Today LAN ' s provide varying selection of network utility functions for user and network managers . These functions may be built into the network operating system. In t his research study a file server has been designed for functioning in a LAN environment. The file server has been considered as a layered structure and functions of each layer specified. Algorithm shave been developed to perform the t11nctions of each of t he layers. The file system considered for the design resembles, UNIX file structure. Various algorithms along with appropriate data structure have been proposed to provide a complete design methodology for a file server.
