AbstractMachining of free form surfaces is a current bottleneck in computer - aided manufacturing . An interface is at present lacking that will bridge the gap from surface desi g n to actual machining . This study presents such an interface specifically designed for 5- axis milling of surfaces represented as bicubic parametric patches. That is, given surface da t a as a collection of patch data, the system automatically generates the necessary tool coordinates plus the appropriate tool orientation that will mill the surface to the desired degree of surface finish and shape. The milling process is divided into two phases; namely , rough- to- depth milling a nd s u r f ace con touring. Tool path generation is carried out based on user - supplied machining specifications like, tool cutter radius, chorda l deviation a nd scallop height tolerance values. For evaluation purpose s, the interface is enhanced with a graphics module that would allow visual verification of the validity of the generated tool paths. The interface can handle tool path generation for milling multiple patches. Optimization of the tool path is achieved by gene r a ting coordinates based on chordal deviation tolerance, scallop height tolerance, a nd the assumption of Zig- zag tool motion. Rough- to-depth milling is likewise optimized by using a two- phase process for removing excess material be for e contouring.
