Abstract | A Digital Elevation Model (DEM) may be described simply as a digital representation of the earth' s surface . DEMs represent a convenient way of storing elevation information and of ranking such information available to application programs. As a result the utilisation of DEMs is becoming increasingly important, and The development of techinques to generate and exploit the elevation data has become a major area of production for many national cartographic organisations. In this study, the algorithm for constructing digital elevation models were developed. Smoothing technique using parametric piecewise cubic interpolation was adopted in order to minimize number of points to digitized which resulted in relieving digitization effort s, reducing digitization time and also lessening errors cd used by manual digitzatlon. Linear interpolation a long the line of greatest lope method was also adopted for used in interpolating the elevation of a point under consideration . An algorithm to find the shortest distances from a contour to an interpolation point was developed . By this algorithm, number of calculations are reduced from all contour points t o only a certain group of contour points which at least one of them will generate a shortest distance from that contour to an considered point. |
