AbstractTwo models are developed for the optimal design of natural gas pipeline systems. The first model determines the least cost design of a natural gas pipeline, while the second evaluates a quantitative measure of reliability which considers the average volume of gas transported These two models are linked together to solve a real world problem on the development of the natural gas pipeline system of gulf of Thailand. As the reliability of gas supply to the city of Bangkok is a crucial factor, the viability of constructing a alternative pipeline with the objective of improving reliability is studied.
