AbstractFloods in the southern Thailand are generally caused by heavy rainfalls which resulted from cyclones or low pressures centers developed in the Gulf of Thailand. Due to the intense rainfall a nd widespread flooding during the third week of November 1988, which caused severe loss of life and damage to property in that area. The city of Hat Yai was also severely affected by the same flood for two days with the flood -depth of almost 2 meters above the highway due to the flood water from Khlong U- Thaphao. Flooding in the Khlong U-Thaphao has been made in this study. A mathematical model of river networks consisting of unsteady free surface flow equation is formulated t o compute the flood flow condition a long the river. The method for solving numerical solutions of governing equations is the finite difference approximation of implicit scheme. The model is calibrated using the flood data of November and December 1981 and then verified by using flood data for the same period of 1984 and 1986 to check the validity of Manning roughness coefficient " n " . Good agreement between the computed and observed water levels are obtained. After the calibration and verification, the model is applied to determine the effectiveness of alternative flood control scheme in term of change in water level. For the individual flood control measures investigated, t h e most effective scheme a long the Khlong U-Thaphao is the bypass channel while the combination between bypassing and channel dredging is the best combination compared t o other combinations which gives the most significant reduction of flood level along Khlong U- Thaphao.
