AbstractThe formulation to obtain governing equation with respect to ske'Y coordinates and set of boundary conditions for skew plate is carried out by reforming the skew plates into rectangular anisotropic plates. The relationships of different parameters such as displacement, stress, strain and stiffness tensors are obtained for plane stress condition as initial formulation. Using such relationships the governing equation and well-posed boundary conditions for skew thin plate in bending is obtained by same way that adopted in Cartesian coordinate system for non skew plate in bending. Solution to governing equation are tried to obtain by proposing deflection functions. The deflection functions assumed in this study for different boundary value problems proved unsatisfactory as it violates boundary condition exceeding tolerable limits to have accurate results. Since deflection functions assumed do not yield satisfactory results the finite element method with skew plate flexure element with four nodes and three degrees of freedom per node is used to find solution to the governing equation. Results obtained from this method show close agreement with available results for most boundary value problems for skew angle less than 50°. For skew angle more than 50° cases results do not show close agreement with available results and also show poor convergence characteristics.
