Abstract | An advanced manufactring system is dynamic and complex in nature. But even more complex for the top management is the matter of making and taking decision on the adoption of appropriate level of automation for the firm. Again, many managers of the firms are unaware of the performance and economic leverage of the advanced manufacturing system. Technology adoption for a firm will be too risky unless economic feasibility is measured and performance of the new system is scaled by the important factors such as productivity and flexibility. In this study, a comparison of economic and performance measure for three manufacturing environment such as existing manufacturing facility in a firm, a flexible manufacturing cell and a flexible manufacturing system is undertaken in a family of parts that include Hub, Discbrake and Pulley. Simulation by General purpose Simulation System (GPSS), an essential ingredient of confidence in system design and in the minimization of risk, has been used for the designing configuration of flexible manufacturing system. Unlike traditional cost accounting system, cost estimation is performed by simple cost models where direct and indirect labor and indirect and direct material costs are combined to find the material and labor costs, overhead has been broken into setup, machine and floorspace cost. Performance measure is conducted by simple productivity and flexibility measuring formula and also Analytic Hierarchy process, a decision making tool. Analytic Hierarchy Process helped establish to bring a relation between the performance measurement and the financial strength of a film. |
