Abstract | The accelerated rate of slope failures alm1g the hill roads of Nepal would
have been minimized choosing comparatively less trouble prone alignments ,
providing sufficient drainage , preserving local vegetation, a11d improving
construction/maintenance techniques. Road sections constructed in the river
valleys above the floodplain were the most problematic than the ridge road
sections. Roads having higher national importance in terms of public traffic flow
and trade routes were less maintained due to budget constraints than rural roads
which were supported by foreign aids . Slope failures were mainly focused in the
zone of sedimentary and weak metamorphic rocks due to heavy weathering and
seepage. Water was considered one of the most common 'final ' causes or triggers
of all major landslides. Rock slope failures were not. serious compared to earth •
slope failures for the blockage of regular traffic flow. Rotational type of slope
failures we re reported to be most severe and in few places slip circles even
crossed the bed of the rivers. To improve the existing condition of
construction/maintenance, typical designs of various measures were provided
realizing their importance in Nepalese hill roads. |
