AbstractThe effect of nitrite inhibition on biological phosphorus removal in anaerobic aerobic activated sludge process was investigated by both continuous and batch experiments. The actual sewage was used in this experiment. In the continuous experiment, obvious and fast deteriorations to the system characteristics were observed by addition of 30 mg/1 nitrite N to the continuous system, and a dose of 5 mg/1 nitrite N was found not to affect. the biological phosphorus removal. In the batch experiments, different inhibition effects were observed by different. sludge from the continuous system. A dose of 10 mg/1 of nitrite seemed not to affect the phosphorus removal in the batch systems. The result of calculation of the data from batch experiments show that the inhibition effect was caused by both reducing the saturation sludge phosphate concentration and initial reaction rate constant through the nitrite addition.
