AbstractIn the last couple of decades, Automated guided vehicles (AGVs) have been used as Material Handling Systems (MHS) in industries. But with manufacturing systems moving forward to the Industry 4.0 era, the traditional approach for AGVs to use a route map for navigation will soon become obsolete if they fail to adapt to these changes in industry. To resolve this issue and to keep the AGVs viable for the industries to effectively use for the foreseeable future, current trends are to make the AGVs free ranging systems. These AGVs apart from being mostly in the development phase, are quite expensive to purchase and maintain and very complicated in operation. This research investigates an innovative method of hybrid navigation, where the best qualities of both fixed path systems and free ranging systems are utilized to give a simple, robust and effective method of AGV navigation which is easy to implement, maintain and operate in a factory layout. This research further investigates an efficient fleet management system which is based on a grid format to offer increased flexibility in AGV navigation, for a smart factory layout with modular workstations.
