Abstract | The effect of preheating raw material before densification
on electrical energy requirement for the process has been
studied. A significant amount of electrical energy could be saved
by densifying sawdust preheated to 130°C at die temperature of
300°C . The energy input to the motor, heaters , and the overall
system was reduced by 54 %, 30.64 % and 40.17 % respectively.
It was found that the most suitable die temperature for
densification of sawdust with the existing briquetting machine is
300°C.
Conventional briquetting was not possible at die temperature
of 250°C or below that. Also densification of preheated materials
was impractical a t preheat temperature 115°C or above with die
temperature of 350°C.
The throughput capacity of the existing briquetting machine
could be increased by about 26 % by operating the screw at higher
speed. The electrical energy requirement per ton of briquette
produced was lower at higher throughput capacity of the
briquetting machine.
The combustion characteristics of briquettes produced from
preheated material were better compared to conventional
briquettes. |
