Abstract | Economic strategy of export-oriented industrialization has
been adopted in Thailand to improve the country's economic performance. Inevitably, the strategy has its implication upon
spatial development of the country.
Based on the economic theory of export-based model, the
regions could earn and develop by exporting t he rich resources
available. The export economy and the resource-based industries
would bring regional balances since the processing industries
would tend to locate in or near resources in respective regions.
The theoretical notion of regional balances which are ex from export economy and equally distributed industrial
locations was scrutinized in this research by comparing with the
real situation in the country. This research study provides the
empirical evidence and assessment upon the locational consequences of t he export-oriented industries distributed in various
regions within the country.
The selection of industries were based on principal exports
productions and their locational distribution were explored at
regional level. The study employed the regional proportion of
factories, employment and natural as well as agricultural resources as the indicators to show the relationship between industries and the _region's resource specialization.
Through the study, it i s found that simple-processing industries were located in the agricultural resource-endowed regions.
The agro-based industries, particularly those involved with semi processing manufactured activities appeared to locate in Bangkok
Metropolitan Area and its five adjacent provinces . Manufacturing
industries are a l so found intensively concentrated in this urban
agglomeration area and its proximity.
Export-oriented industries have tendency to locate in Bangkok' s five adjacent provinces and would extend to its immediate
surrounding regions, i.e. the central and eastern regions. As a
result, inter- regional imbalances would be persistently felt
between the expansive Bangkok core region and other peripheral
rural areas.
In order to correct this situation, regional centres should
be extensively developed to help counter the uneven distribution
development pattern. Provision of Infrastructure as well as
communication and other services should be upgraded to a certain
standard to create an potential urban-industrial environment and
hence induce the new enterprises into the production activities
in urban centres in respective regions. |
