AbstractWith rapid development of microcomputer, local area networks (LAN) have played an increasing important role in information systems as well as control systems . An adequate and proper planning is necessary when a LAN is selected for an organization . This study provides a software tool t o select a suitable LAN configuration for an organization. These tools provide an interactive environment for analyzing user requirements. Based upon analysis alternative set of solutions are provided. The solutions are from a set of configurations based upon IEEE 802 standards. The subset of solutions can then be evaluated using performance criterion in terms of delays and throughput or cost effectiveness of the proposed configurations . On the basis of evaluation the user can decide which LAN configuration is most suitable for his organization. The software tool provide s an interactive and user friendly environment. This is suitable for decision making in LAN planning.
