| Abstract | The characteristics of suspended sediment in a river around a pump intake, located in a bend of a river , and in a settling basin are investigated through a hydraulic model study and also by a mathematical (numerical ) mode l . The pump intake of Marchwar Lift Irrigation Project , Nepal is studied for this purpose. The flow and concentration fields with t he proposed modified shape of the river around the pump intake are investigated. The concentration field around the intake, for the range of discharges , stages , and concentrations tested , is of the same order as the mean sediment concentration in the river. The velocity directions around the pump intake are found to be directed away f rom the outer bend f or both the bottom as well as surface currents thus a favorable site for locating the intake is indicated. For all discharges in the river and different rates of pumping , the concentration of sediment in the diverted (pumped ) water is almost the same as the mean sediment concentration in the river. The trap efficiency of the settling basin, however, is found to b e poor. Numerical simulation of the concentration profiles in the settling basin also results in a low efficiency of t h e basin. |
