AbstractThis study concentrates on evaluating the labor, equipment, land, energy and investment productivity in precast concrete industry in China; and developing a new mode l to estimate the comprehensive performance of a unit by using physical quantities for partial productivity and the average weight of individual inputs. The results s how that there are large differences in partial productivity and total productivity indicator (TPI) values among different regions. The TPI value in the best region- -Shanghai is 1.62, which is almost three times of that in the worst region--Central with TPI 0 .57. This shows that there is a large potential for China to improve the productivity in precast concrete product industry. The values for TPI in large, medium and small companies are 1 . 20, 0 .77, 0 .91 respectively. This indicates that small firms have more competitive ability than t h e medium ones in this industry. The TPI model is derived by using the definition of partial and total productivity as well as their relationship , and thus this mode l can be used in other fields if some items are modified.
