| Abstract | Severa l new Ri tz basis upd a ting sc h e mes h ave been i nvestigated for the solution of nonlinear s truc tural problems. It wa s found that wh e n eve r the error norm for spatial d istribution of the l oad exceeds a tolerance limit, only one Ritz vector corresponding to the updated unbalanced force should be added while all the previous Ritz vectors are maintained but reorthogona lize d t o t h e new vector. Several nonlin ear structural problems have been tested using t h e modified Newton- Raphson iteration t echnique in t h e reduced space , in conjunction with an automatic arc-length control. Comp l ex nonlinear equilibrium paths can be traced with surprisingly high accuracy , and at reduced computational cost. This confirms the same advantages of Ritz vectors for nonlinear analysis as enjoyed in dynamic analysis . |
