| Abstract | A laboratory-scale experimental study on in- line flocculation membrane filtration was reported in this thesis. This study was focused on the principles and advantages of in-line flocculation in crossflow microfiltration (CFMF) and its applications. (i ) Kaolin clay suspension of known concentration was used with alum to study the principles and advantages of in-line flocculation with CFMF. These experiments l ed to the conclusion that the residence time of flocculant played an insignificant role in this study; determination of optimum dose of flocculant and crossflow velocity were essential for optimum performance. (ii) An in- line flocculation arrangement with alum , FeCla and powered activated carbon (PAC ) to treat the AIT sewage was studied. The results supported the advantages of in-line CFMF when the optimum operation parameters were chosen. The sludge production in dead-end filtration and deposit on membrane of CFMF due to flocculent usage was also estimated . (iii) Pulp and paper mill black liquor flocculated with alum, FeCla, and lime was filtered using polysulfone membrane with molecular cutoff size 10,000 (UF-lOps) . Application in black liquor treatment indicated that the permeate flux increase was insignificant when flocculant was used. Also no apparent improvement in permeate quality was observed. |
