Abstract | The use of groundwater is increasing rapidly but no facilities for proper monitoring the groundwater have been found in the study area. It has made difficult to give proper planning for the protection from the further degradation of the groundwater and continuous decline in water level. By taking this into c_onsideration, this study is carried out to analyze groundwater quality and design monitoring system for the study area. The geochemical and geostatistical analyses of groundwater quality are carried out in this study. The result of geochemical analysis by means of graphical representative methods shows that the water quality is not so spatially varied. But the critical zone maps for pH, ammonia, iron and manganese show that these chemical parameters are found in some places beyond their permissible limits for domestic use as specified by WHO drinking water standards. For design purpose, seven alternative monitoring network scenarios consisting of different numbers of monitoring wells are developed and the multi-criteria decision making approach known as compromise programming is employed to minimize the investment cost and the estimation error obtained from geostatistical analysis (using GeoEAS software). The result of the sensitivity analysis by compromise programming shows that the solutions are highly sensitive and depend upon the weights selected for the criteria and value of p. But the final decision depends upon the arbitration of the decision maker. |
