Abstract | The effect of four different plant populations (Viz. 44,000, 33,000, 26,000 and 22,000
plants/ha) with and without being intercropped with mungbean (Vigna radiata) on
growth and yield of sweet corn (Zea mays .L) was studied.
Different plant populations did not show significant difference on growth
parameters and yield parameters of sweet corn. However the number of cobs/plant was
increased significantly in population density of 22,000 and 26,000 plants/ha than other
two plant populations. Although total and marketable cob yield was not significantly
different among the different treatments, the highest total and marketable cob yield of
5.34 and 4.97 t/ha was obtained from the plant population of 33,000 plants/ha while it
tended to decrease with decreasing or increasing plant populations.
Growth parameters of mungbean did not show significant difference among the
different plant populations of sweet corn while seed yield of mungbean was significantly
increased with decreasing plant populations. The highest mungbean seed yield of 520
kg/ha was obtained from the treatment with 22,000 plants/ha of sweet corn.
There was no intercropping effect of mungbean on growth and yield parameters
of sweet corn. |
