Abstract | This study focuses on the hydraulic aspect of water management in the
tail end lateral (Thabua) of the Phitsanulok Irrigation Project. A problem of
unreliable water supply from the main canal to the lateral was conceived
before studying the supply - demand situation. Use of mathematical model to
describe the hydraulic behavior was found important.
The regulated canal was modelled using the Hydrodynamic module of
MIKEll, a microcomputer based software developed by the Danish Hydraulic
Institute. The model was calibrated using field data. Simulations were carried
out to study effects of various operational scenarios. In order to assess the
hydraulics of the exiting canal system, all the check gates were calibrated in
t he field and the exiting canal profile and cross-sections were obtained from
field survey. The computed and observed water levels and discharges are
compared at each off take point in order to know water deficiency.
Using the data of Thabua head regulator as upstream boundary condition,
it is found that the hydraulic conditions do not match with the design needed
to meet t he water supply requirements at most off take points of the tail end
lateral. This problem is acute in the dry season. Also, for the native paddy
crop grown in the wet season, water supply is not enough . Water management
methods to alleviate these problems are dealt with and suggestions are made
for improved operation. |
