Abstract | Expert Systems (ES), as the term implies, are computer based, incorporating the
capability to reason and perform the aimed intelligent task, and simulating the behavior of the
human expert. The crux of the system lies in three pillars, namely (i) Development of the
knowledge base, i.e the data bank of expert knowledge, (ii) The inference mechanism, i.e, to
perform intelligent task, and (iii) The facility to generate likely alternative solutions.
The ES developed, views the task of diagnosis as a case of implementing defaults, and
incorporates Least Exception Logic (LEL) in unison with the <0-1> Integer Linear Programming
(ILP) to draw inference and generate alternative solutions in the framework of default logic.
The LEL sets up the feasible region for the diagnostic task, while the ILP solves this as a
minimization problem to obtain an optimal solution as also to order all possible extensions
maintaining the overall consistency of the inference procedure.
The knowledge for the ES is stored in the form of Production Rules and Frames. The
Production Rules . are the heuristic knowledge, used in a forward chaining, symptom driven
fashion to set up the search space for the diagnostic procedure. The inference mechanism using
the ILP gets the most likely diagnosis in the search space set up in the previous phase, which
is further enumerated in the causal modelling frame work, a reasoning strategy based on the
structure and behavior of the device under diagnosis. |
