AbstractThe problem addressed is the computation of nodal and .system expected unserved demand, unavailability and other reliability indices of a water supply system having random demand, ground-level I clear water storage, unreliable pumps, and unreliable treatment plant. An individual nodal demand model of two stage (normal, emergency) Markov process is assumed. The failure of the treatment plant is taken into consideration. A Markov Chain Approach is employed to determine ·of the system states. It is automatically controlled a nd the the steady state probabilities assumed that the pumps are flow through the pipes are regulated according to a real-time optimal policy which gives equal importance to the flow quantity and pressure-head at individual demand nodes. The above optimal pump-discharge and f 1 o w - regulation policy can give priority for emergency demand and critical nodes by assigning different shortage cost factors. Key Words: Water distribution systems, Ground-level storages, Treatment plant capability, Mode of failure of treatment plant, Reliability, availability, Unavailability, Unserved demand, Hydraulic . I . . Effective supply, Shortage cost, Optimal operation .
