Abstract | The construction sector is an essential component of a nation's industrial and infrastructure growth. However, it is generally a masculine sector, posing a significant challenging problem to female's fair treatment. The difficulties that females experience in entering and retaining jobs in the construction sector are highlighted in several findings and studies on the status of women in the industry. This is mainly the obstacles that contribute to female's lesser involvement in construction field. The hindrances of glass ceiling enhance females from advancing to leadership roles, and also from earning the equal pay and advantages as males. These glass-ceiling factors statistically significantly influence on the job satisfaction of women employees. The job satisfaction level of employee takes part in a major role in organization and career advancement. This research conducted literature studies to explore glass-ceiling factors as well as their influence on female's career progression in Myanmar's construction industry. The critical importance of women construction practitioners' and employees' job satisfaction in masculine fields, as well as organizational performance, was also investigated. The research was carried out using a survey questionnaire created with a Google form and distributed to 300 female respondents. The roles of respondents are construction professionals such as project manager, project control engineer, project assistant, project coordinator, construction director, construction manager, quantity surveyor, senior engineer and site engineer who work in Myanmar construction sector. To test the relationship among the factors affecting glass-ceiling, glass-ceiling and job satisfaction, factor analysis, correlation analysis and ordinal regression analysis are applied in this study in order to meet the objectives of the research. Findings from this research indicates that lack of professional ability and knowledge has noticeable impact on glass-ceiling, and lack of provision of dependable child-care facilities is the highest rank among glass-ceiling. Moreover, factors affecting glass ceiling relating to sexual harassment and gender inequality have strong positive correlation with glass-ceiling whereas all the factors affecting glass-ceiling have weak negative correlation with women’s job satisfaction level. Lastly, glass-ceiling is found to have negative effect on women’s job satisfaction level; glass-ceiling relating to gender insensitive policies has a negative significant effect on job satisfaction level. |
