AbstractThis study is concerned with the evaluation of reliability of water supply system consisting of a water treatment plant, a transmission storage with transmission pumping stations, transmission network to distribution pumping stations and distribution network to demand nodes. The possible failure of a treatment plant, transmission distribution pumps and individual pipe, limited capacity of transmission and distribution storage, and nodal demand fluctuation in flows and heads are all taken into account in evaluating both system and nodal reliability indices. The concept of expected served demand is employed as a reliability measure. Two conflicting quantities, nodal flow and nodal head are considered in such a way that nodal flow with insufficient nodal head reduce served water at the node. In addition, pump operation(to find flow rate and speed rate of pumps at transmission and distribution pumping stations) and network flow operation( to find link flows and nodal heads) are made optimally at each system state in such a way that the sum of deficit of nodal served demand is minimized. The Markov chain model is employed to describe the evolution of the system over time. Bangkok water supply system is shown as an example of this considered system.
