AbstractThis case study is focused towards improving the material handling system in an electronics component manufacturing . As the prospects of semiconductor industry in the Philippines are bright, local electronics companies have to stay on being competitive not only through their lower labor cost but b y other means as well . Keeping t h e productivity up and the manufacturing cost down can largely help. One area that can contribute to this end is the improvement of material handling system . This study demonstrates an improvement that can be achieved i n an existing material handling system of a semiconductor company covering one particular multi-storeyed assembly line. Aiming at system approach, the materials, movement , methods and cost are analyzed with the aid of structuring the material flow diagram, operation process chart, flow process and the handling activity and handling cost and savings data form . Also used to verify the facility layout effectiveness is the CRAFT software , and the NPV, IRR, PBP methods of economic analysis to evaluate the costs involved in the proposed system. This study recommends primarily t he use of strategical ly-located dumbwaiter and curtailment of indirect labor requirements for the proposed material handling system .
