Abstract | "Learning" is a process of accumulation of technological capabilities. It is used in an aggregated sense to refer to the process by which the firm accumulates the technological and managerial skills to carry on the business. It may arise from any combination of education, training or experience. It may achieve from simply hiring expertise or readymade technology which have been created elsewhere. Technological learning through the learning processes are the means to accomplish the sustained development of the firm technical capabilities. This case study is the firm's based research study. It has identified the technological development through the learning process in a Thai petroleum exploration and production company, Thai Shell Exploration and Production Company Limited. It is separated into 2 major parts, Learning Mechanisms and Influencing Factors of Learning. Under the learning mechanisms, two major activities were identified, doing-based and non doing-based Learning. Doing-based learning mechanisms are often used to refer to a process of acquiring skill and knowledge that depends largely or entirely on experience. Here, two-sub mechanisms were identified including learning by doing and learning by failing. Learning by doing is basically generated from continuously successive development of the currying out operational tasks. It is composed of two sub-categorizes, learning by operating and, learning by changing. But for learning by failing, the concept is quite different from that of learning by doing. It is considered to be a discontinuous development process, created by using the results from previous failure attempted in consideration before doing the new things. But it is still giving the same results by increasing individual or firm's knowledge, experiences and skills from the previously failure attempted. Non doing based learning mechanisms are important. sources of increased technological capacity. They are likely to involve explicit effort and investment in the acquisition of technological capability. Here, it is includes four types of sub-learning mechanisms such as, learning by training, learning by hiring expertise system, learning by searching and learning by system performance feedback or system learning. Throughout the in-depth case study, two major types of influencing factors of learning were identified, which encounter in the learning processes. They are learning constraints and learning motivators. Learning constraints are composed of language barrier, cultural differences and business attitude. In the other hand, the learning motivators are composed of many distinctive factors which the company have considered. They include technology accumulation, explicit. technology efforts, top management support, formalization of learning system, appropriate technology choice, personal attitude towards learning and their capabilities. |
